Designer Profile – James Michael Howard

I first noticed the work of Jim Howard in Veranda, and, of course, it was the obelisks that caught my attention.

His style is serene and sophisticated. It feels modern and comfortable. I want to sink in to a sofa and read a book.

This room exudes sophistication. The use of a warm brown on the walls is a bold choice and creates a calming effect. He decorated the room with classically inspired pieces including the daybed, the bust, and the pair of obelisks standing atop the bookshelves on either side of the mantelpiece. I love the Asian screen as wall decoration too!

In this Chicago apartment, Jim Howard creates a simple tableau on an antique table. He centers it with a mid-century gold lamp flanked by a simple crystal obelisk and a round glass vase. It is a masterful juxtaposition of shapes and styles.

This neutral living area allows for the decorative objects to stand out. The ottoman is styled with antique boxes and a drinks tray, while the side table has a collection of three obelisks.

I’m glad to have ‘discovered’ Jim Howard. His sophisticated style, along with the decorative use of obelisks, provides inspiration for my next project!
